Santa Fe Songwriter to perform free concert at Centre Stage

Monday, October 25th, 2010
The Stagelights Musical Arts Community will present a free concert featuring Santa Fe songwriter and recording artist Jamie Michaels at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at Centre Stage, 703 Chetco Ave.
“We are presenting this concert for free as part of our mission to bring music education, enrichment and enjoyment to people of all ages, regardless or their ability to pa,” said organizer Perry Devine. “We hope that this will encourage more people to attend so that they can get a taste of the high-quality touring musicians that we have been bringing to town on a regular basis.”
Michaels, with a long career that has seen him come full circle from 1960s singer songwriter through his time spent as lead vocalist for southern cult rockers the Truly Dangerous Swamp Band, has always remained true to one thing – the song.
According to his website, in the mid 1990s, Michaels relocated to the New Mexican desert town of Santa Fe. It was here that he made the transition from performing primarily other people’s material to writing his own. The voice he found is nothing short of amazing. He has since released seven well-received solo albums.
His finely honed songwriting skills have been praised in acoustic music publications like Sing Out! and Dirty Linen magazine, as well as being singled out in songwriting competitions like the John Lennon songwriting contest and the Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Contest where he is a three time finalist.
In addition to touring the United States performing at clubs, festivals and house concerts, Michaels has also toured extensively in England and Italy. He also released an album on Club de Musique records, an independent label based in Milan, Italy.
Michaels has just finished recording his eight album, the man with the time machine. A single from that album, “Black River,” has just been released. The proceeds from the sale of the single are being donated to the Greater New Orleans Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping Gulf coast families in need.
More information about Michaels and samples of his music can be found at www.jaimemichaels.com.

The United Kingdom-based guitar and fiddle duo Boyd and Wain will perform their mix of American-folk music at 7 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 16), at Centre Stage, 703 Chetco Ave., Brookings musicians Mariah Leanne and Mason McKinney will open for the duo.
There is a $8 suggested donation for the show, which benefits Brookings’ Stagelights Musical Arts Community.
Touring the West Coast in support of their debut release,  Ain’t No Fairy Tale, Katy Boyd, guitar, and Benny Wain, fiddle, play a mix of Americana music that’s not just catchy, but meaningful.”
Joan Baez was my first hero, and Pete Seeger and all those people. So I guess I wanted to get a message across. I guess that was always at the back of my mind,” Boyd said in a recent interview with the San Jose Mercury Daily News.
The musicians’ website describes their music as “pure roots and rhythm” and their songs as “compelling, home grown tales of everyday life.”“Boyd pokes fun as easily as she tells a story of unfulfilled dreams. The sound is honest and original, the vocals are passionate and Benny’s fiddlin’ is just plain brilliant,” the website states. A review on NowPlayingNashville.com said: “I saw these two play at the Bluebird Cafe and was completely blown away by them. Katy’s songwriting is first rate, the songs were powerful and very clever. The fiddler was absolutely amazing, and really knew how to play! Together they had great stage chemistry, and I can’t wait to see them again.”

Earlier in her career, Boyd won the prestigious USA West Coast Songwriter’s Association’s annual contest. She ran off to England for adventure, and stayed. Benny Wain has been playing fiddle in festivals, pubs and concert halls since the age of 12, sharing stages with the Oyster Band, Shane McGowan, the Dubliners and Davey Arthur.The duo’s debut CD has hit the charts in Europe and is getting great reviews across the United Kingdom. Last year they won the notable Trowbridge Village Pump Festival Unsigned Artist Competition.
~~~The mission of Stagelights Musical Arts Community is to provide music education, enjoyment and enrichment to people of all ages in the community, regardless of their ability to pay.
Floating Glass Balls (really!) plays
Pistol River Saturday (Oct. 9)
PISTOL RIVER – Floating Glass Balls will come ashore and make their way to the Pistol River Friendship Hall for a concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9.
The name may not work well on a marquis, as bassist Bill Uhlig was quick to point out. In fact, not one of the five would admit to coming up with it. But it stuck and has been described as suited for their folksy, traditional, bluegrassy (beachgrassy) sound. Ask anyone along Oregon’s North Coast where The Balls can be found and they’ll point to Bill’s Tavern in Cannon Beach, where the band performs every Thursday night.
Each of the band’s members has played there, together or individually, for years. Mandolin player Peter “Spud” Siegel has since 1977, when Bill’s hosted a weekly open jam. Over the years Bill’s remodeled and became a little more refined, wanting an actual band.Hence, Floating Glass Balls. Siegel met the others in turn playing at one spot or another. First there was dobro player Dan Conner at a jam session at Spud’s brother’s house 20 years ago. A retired army colonel and engineer, Conner is a combination of West Point grad and life-long bluegrass fan. Next came Uhlig. He and Siegel have played together in coastal staple Bond Street Blues Band since 1989. Then there was fiddler Gary Keiski, who was introduced to Siegel through guest washboard player Billy Hults. The three of them were roommates for a time in the early 1990s. Lastly, the band’s youngest member is guitarist Joel Marshall. He watched the others play at Bill’s and at the American Legion Hall in Cannon Beach about six or seven years ago. He sings most of The Balls’ songs.
The band’s music is broad and pulls from many genres – bluegrass, Caribbean, contemporary, country, and swing tunes – the likes of the Stanley Brothers and the Carter Family, to name just a couple. Tickets are $15 and available at Words and Pictures in Brookings, Book Dock in Harbor and Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach. Tickets may also be reserved online at http://www.pistolriver.com or by calling 541-247-2848. The Pistol River Concert Association offers a $5 student discount or refund at the door with identification.
Matt Meighan draws on his years as an activist, journalist, parent and poet, writing songs that are at turns personal, political, poignant and funny, infused with a philosophical bent and an audible love of language.
A song collector as well as writer, “Meighan mixes his tradition-steeped, thought-provoking originals with songs by fellow songwriters as well as older songs from the folk and blues traditions. His commitments to good writing and ‘truth-telling’ are clear in the songs he chooses and the songs he writes, many of which are performed by other songwriters,” according to his press release.
Meighan is currently recording his second CD, “Long Way ‘Round.” His engaging, relaxed performance style and fingerstyle acoustic guitar are well-suited to intimate listening venues like Centre Stage, said concert organizer Perry Devine.
According to his website, Meighan has traveled the world with his music, performing in venues and on street corners across the U.S., Australia and Italy, and has regularly brought his songs to the pubs of Ireland over the last 20 years. Since moving to Portland Matt has become both a popular performer and an ardent supporter of the Portland-area acoustic music community.
