Slow Children rocks Brookings Saturday (Nov. 27)

The three members of the rock band Slow Children are returning to their hometown of Brookings to peform a full-blown rock show for all ages at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Redwood Theater, 621 Chetco Ave.Tickets are $15 at the door.

Coastal Grooves caught up with the three members of Slow Children during a practice session in Brookings Monday night. The group said it plans to pull out all the stops — light show, video screen and more — during their 2-hour concert. A full feature story about the past, present and future of Slow Children will be published in Saturday’s (Nov. 27) issue of the Curry Coastal PIlot.
The power-rock trio, fresh from playing some of the most popular rock clubs in Las Vegas, will play songs from their 2009 release “Life in Reverie” and several new songs — posted below — slated for later release.The band consists of Brookings-Harbor High School students Kevin Hutman (drums), Caleb Moffitt (bass and vocals) and Bryan Bacci (guitar). Their musical influences include Sublime, Silver Chair, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Floater and the Beatles. Their music has been described by others as a blend of ’90s alternative rock, ’70s progressive rock, with a touch of reggae and jazz. Concert and guitar workshop Saturday

Portland singer-songwriter Robert Richter will offer a free one-hour guitar workshop followed by a two-hour concert in Brookings on Saturday, Nov. 20.
The concert is schedule for 7 to 9 p.m. at the Chetco Playhouse, 1240 Chetco Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door or $8 in advance at Cousins & Co. Music, 615 Chetco Ave.
At 2 p.m. that same day, Richter will offer a slide guitar workshop for players and non-players interested in the slide guitar sound. The workshop will happen at the new Stagelights Musical Arts Community headquarters, 617 Chetco Ave., just south of the Redwood Theater.
The workshop will include:
•Brief history of slide guitar, including use of glass and brass slides.
•Basic open tuning techniques to illustrate how it is most commonly used especially in blues.
•Types of strings used (thicker gauge) and how to raise your strings with a special tool — needed to create the sound.
•Most important technique — the secret to get the sound you want and once you know this you will be able to practice on your own and develop your own style
•Strumming and fingerpicking styles.
Richter, who taught himself to play guitar at age 12, is renowned for his slide guitar work. He has been featured on numerous radio music programs, including National Public Radio’s “River City Folk” and Sirius Satellite Network’s “Bob Dylan Radio Hour.”
Richter is “an energetic performer creating music that blends different genres from folk to blues to rock all played with passion and energy entertaining audiences around the Pacific Northwest and beyond,” according to his  promotional material.

Dynamic duo: Greeninger and Kai at Pistol River Saturday

Singer-songwriters Dayan Kai and Keith Greeninger will perform their mix of storytelling acoustic music at 8 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 13) at the Pistol River Friendship Hall, 24194 Carpenterville Rd.
The duo is touring to support their debut CD “Make It Rain.”
The concert is part of the Pistol River Concert Association series. Tickets are $15 ($5 for students) and are available at the door or at Words and Pictures in Brookings, The Book Dock in Harbor, and Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach. Dayan Kai: Whether he is playing the piano, string or wind instruments or percussion, Kai is an instrumental virtuoso with an outstanding voice to match, according to promotional material.
He was born without sight, but that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing a career in music. Formally trained since the age of 2, Kai has established himself as a singer-songwriter, arranger and producer of music. He often accompanies notable artists from around the world in many different music styles.
His diverse studies have included training with renowned world music composer Lou Harrison, Latin percussionist Michael Strunk, jazz trumpeter/arranger Ray Brown, and mandolin master David Grisman.

Keith Greeninger: Greeninger is a seasoned troubadour, political activist and award-winning songwriter who has performed to enthusiastic crowds in Curry County several times.
Greeninger “weaves compelling tales with a raw, emotional power through a soulful and authentic musical landscape,” according to promotional material.
His music has been described as ranging from “deep, laid back grooves of a heart wrenching ballad, to the righteous intensity of a hard-driving anthem.”

The musicians’ CD “Make It Rain” is a live studio recording produced with renowned Grammy-nominated engineer and producer Cookie Marenco. The disc captures the natural dynamics, spontaneity and passion of the duo’s performances. It features fan favorites only heard in concert, and includes some of the musicians’ favorite cover songs.
