Monday, August 30th, 2010
What the heck! Here’s a special bonus podcast with no boring DJ talk, just 31 minutes of mellow music including an acoustic instrumental from Crescent City guitarist Jon Parmentier, and a synthesizer-heavy, prog rock instrumental (“Moody Lover”) by Brookings musician Pye White. The podcast also features a cover of “Dust in the Wind” and the original “Best Part of Waking Up” by the Gold Beach-based duo Homemade Jam. We wrap things up with live acoustic songs by non-local artists OneEskimo (“Astronaut”), Martin Sexton (“Hallelujah”) and Phish-frontman Trey Anastasio (“Waste”).

Rävinwolf returns to Brookings Saturday, July 17

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Rävinwolf performs at Brookings Centre Stage in May.

Husband/wife guitar duo Rävenwolf will bring their funky, folksy, acoustic, bluesy rock and roll back to Centre Stage (703 Chetco Ave.) for a 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. dinner show on Saturday, July 17. The price is $15 for dinner and show, or just $5 for the show. This is the second time the rocking, harmonizing couple has played at this intimate venue and anticipation is running high. I was fortunate enough to catch Rävenwolf’s concert in May and was blown away by their versatility and overall musicianship. This time they hope to have their regular percussionist with them, which will elevate the music to new heights. The Washington-based acoustic musicians Jamey and Heather Bilyeu work magic with just two guitars and dual vocals to defy musical boundaries, switching from gritty blues to rock to country. Their overall style reminded me of ’60s and ’70s artists Jefferson Airplane, Heart, CSNY and Bonnie Raitt. And, while they’re more than happy to cover these artists’ songs, their originals are just as strong. If you are a fan of blues, rock and roll and acoustic folk, don’t miss Rävenwolf.

Find out more about the band, their music and see video performances at www.ravinwolf.com

Meanwhile, here is an excerpt of Ravinwolf’s concert at Centre Stage in May.

Jan. 2010 benefit performance at the Redwood Theater, Brookings.

The Stagelights House Band, a group of volunteer musicians that promotes the nonprofit “Stagelights Musical Arts Community” in Curry County, performed a benefit concert January, 2010, at the Redwood Theater in Brookings. This is the first time the band performed for the public, playing a 35-minute concert of covers and originals prior to the screening of the hit music documentary “Playing for Change.” The band includes Perry Devine (guitar/vocals), Kim Banfield (vocals), James Anderson (vocals), Jef Hatch (harmonica/vocals), Tim Muller (electric guitar), Paul Lopez (bass), Scott Graves (congas/percussion) and Gordon Later (drums). This soundboard recording of the event includes: Make a change, River of Life, Bad, Bad Leroy Brown, Take Me To The River, Down By The Boardwalk, and Stand By Me.

Coastal Grooves Podcast #2 now available

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

We start things off with two songs – “Roadmaps and Sneakers” and “Failure” – from Brookings singer/songwriter Mariah Leanne. She recently released an independent CD featuring a number of great songs. The CD is available for purchase at Earl E Books and the Backstage Cafe, both located at 703 Chetco Ave., Brookings. More information about Mariah Leanne and samples of her music can be found at: www.myspace.com/mariahleannemusic. Her music is also for sale through iTunes.

Next, we move into jam band terriorty (relax, all the songs clock in at 6 minutes or less). The third song is a live version of “Fearless,” recorded several years ago by one of my favorite current bands: Umphrey’s McGee (www.umphreys.com).

The fourth song is “Dusty’s Trumpet,” a live rock instrumental by up-and-comers Ultraviolet Hippopotamus. Yes, that’s the band’s real name. Check them out at www.uvhippomusic.com.

We wrap up this episode with “Desert Rat,” a song from the non-traditional string band Hot Buttered Rum (www.hotbutteredrum.net) .

I hope you enjoy this second podcast. I certainly enjoyed making it. Check back often for the latest information on the local music scene, as well as another music-filled podcast in April.
