Bonus podcast featuring local music!

Monday, August 30th, 2010
What the heck! Here’s a special bonus podcast with no boring DJ talk, just 31 minutes of mellow music including an acoustic instrumental from Crescent City guitarist Jon Parmentier, and a synthesizer-heavy, prog rock instrumental (“Moody Lover”) by Brookings musician Pye White. The podcast also features a cover of “Dust in the Wind” and the original “Best Part of Waking Up” by the Gold Beach-based duo Homemade Jam. We wrap things up with live acoustic songs by non-local artists OneEskimo (“Astronaut”), Martin Sexton (“Hallelujah”) and Phish-frontman Trey Anastasio (“Waste”).

Rävinwolf returns to Brookings Saturday, July 17

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Rävinwolf performs at Brookings Centre Stage in May.

Husband/wife guitar duo Rävenwolf will bring their funky, folksy, acoustic, bluesy rock and roll back to Centre Stage (703 Chetco Ave.) for a 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. dinner show on Saturday, July 17. The price is $15 for dinner and show, or just $5 for the show. This is the second time the rocking, harmonizing couple has played at this intimate venue and anticipation is running high. I was fortunate enough to catch Rävenwolf’s concert in May and was blown away by their versatility and overall musicianship. This time they hope to have their regular percussionist with them, which will elevate the music to new heights. The Washington-based acoustic musicians Jamey and Heather Bilyeu work magic with just two guitars and dual vocals to defy musical boundaries, switching from gritty blues to rock to country. Their overall style reminded me of ’60s and ’70s artists Jefferson Airplane, Heart, CSNY and Bonnie Raitt. And, while they’re more than happy to cover these artists’ songs, their originals are just as strong. If you are a fan of blues, rock and roll and acoustic folk, don’t miss Rävenwolf.

Meanwhile, here is an excerpt of Ravinwolf’s concert at Centre Stage in May.

Act Fast! Manda Mosher in Brookings Tuesday (June 15)

Monday, June 14th, 2010
Touring singer/songwriter Manda Mosher will perform songs her latest CD at 7 p.m. Tuesday (June 15) at The Salty Dog Coffee Bar at the Port of Brookings Harbor. Use the links below to listen to her latest single, City of Clowns, and watch a video of One True Love.
According to her website, Mosher is an Americana rock singer and songwriter specializing in soothing the weary soul. As a sixth generation Los Angeleno raised on the sounds of Dylan, Petty, and Springsteen, Mosher delivers authentic roadhardened stories of an American girl wiser than her years, combined with a sultry voice.
Manda’s newest release “City of Clowns,” on Red Parlor Records, is an ode to her hometown. The EP is a follow up the 2009 debut album “Everything You Need” of which American Songwriter magazine proclaimed “beautiful, compelling melodies with poignant lyrics sung with a sensual, sultry authority…This good, this is now.”
Joining Manda is musician  Ashley Raines for their In Lieu of Flowers Tour. The two songwriters will take turns backing each other up in showcasing their respective material.

Rävinwolf: “Funky, folksy, eclectic, organic bluesy rock and roll”

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The husband/wife guitar duo Rävenwolf, scheduled to play in Brookings at Centre Stage Thursday (April 20), arrived in Curry County early to play a set Sunday at the Gold Beach Wine and Art Festival. After listening to the first half of their set, and to their CD “Buttons and Freedom,” I’m eagerly awaiting their Brookings gig.
Seattle-based acoustic musicians Jamey and Heather Bilyeu work magic with just two guitars and dual vocals to defy musical boundaries, switching from gritty blues to rock to country. Their overall style reminded me of ’60s and ’70s artists Jefferson Airplane, Heart, CSNY and Bonnie Raitt. And, while they’re more than happy to cover these artists’ songs, their originals are just as strong.

Guitarist Jamey Bilyeu called once described his music as “funky, folksy, eclectic, organic bluesy rock and roll.” Yep, that about covers it.
Jamey’s gravelly voice is a perfect match to his firey fretwork on blues-based songs. Heather is no slouch in the guitar department but her vocals soar – part Ann Wilson (Heart), part Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane). Their harmonies are stellar.
At one point during their Sunday gig, the band performed a bluesy cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Give Me One Reason,” and it rocked.
Rävinwolf will play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Centre Stage, 703 Chetco Ave. Tickets are $10 at the door, $8 in advance.
Have a listen to some of their music below, taken from their album “Buttons and Freedom.” More music and video concert footage can be found at www.ravinwolf.com.
